From What to serve with all that bad news about favourites? an article by Mary Kwang in The Sunday Times on 25th January 2004:
CHICKEN IS NOT THE TOP CHOICE THIS YEAR because of the bird flu that is ravaging regions around Hong Kong, such as Vietnam, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
As for shark's fin, my friend, Sau Lan, broke with her annual tradition of serving the delicacy this year after watching television news reports from the mainland last month that industrial bleach had been used to whiten shark's fin at a processing factory in Guangdong.
The mainland authorities confiscated a batch of shark's fin that was to have been sold in Hong Kong. Apparently, a tonne of industrial bleach, which contains toxins and heavy metals, is about HK$1,000 (S$220) cheaper than the type of bleach approved for use on food.
Furthermore, a consultant with the Hong Kong food and environmental hygiene department said last November that shark, tuna and swordfish were found to have three times the international safety levels for mercury.
READING KWANG'S REPORT ABOVE after three days of feasting last week unsettled me for a while. Yaks! The dreadful things that unscrupulous businessmen can even think of doing! Now, those sharksfin and Chinese sausages that i had eaten... where could they have come from? :-p
Why do so many people have cancer nowadays? Even young people in their thirties have it! Is it, as claimed by some, due to the chemicals in our food, such as residual chlorine in drinking water, insecticides in vegetables and bleaches on white pistachio nuts? All because of the 'antics' of unscrupulous businessmen such as those in the movie Erin Brockovich and Kwang's report?
Was rather disturbed when i first found out that a number of people i know have cancer. Neighbours, relatives of friends, church mates, and so on. Thank God, not among my relatives. Never, i hope. For a while, tried to console myself and whoever i happen to discuss this with that, "Sooner or later, all of us will die of something. It's just a matter of time."
Last Friday however, a friend countered me gently, "But this is a very expensive and painful way of dying." She knew. Her mother had been diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer and had just gone through a round of chemotherapy.
i wonder whether those unscrupulous businessmen might have used a twisted variation of my logic, "Sooner or later, all of us will die of something. It's just a matter of time. So why not sooner and let us make lots of money in the meantime?"
What about the people who work for or with these men, or are simply in the know? Don't they have a conscience? Do they feel that they have no other choice but to comply? Among them are there some self-proclaimed 'long-suffering Christians' (or other over-religious types) who believe in 'loving' these wicked men no matter what? "Never mind about the suffering of others?!!"
Are there or will there be any Erin Brockovich among them who will blow the whistle and bring these wicked people to justice and save innocent people from needless pain and deaths? i live in hope....
