Extracted from the August 18 reading of Our Daily Bread on a 'corny Tate family':
TEAMWORK IS ESSENTIAL in business and industry. To underscore this point, Co-op Magazine included this item: "You've heard of the corny Tate family. They pervade every organization. There is Dick Tate, who wants to run everything. Ro Tate tries to change everything. Agi Tate stirs up trouble whenever possible, and Irri Tate always lends him a hand.
"Whenever new ideas are suggested, Hesi Tate and Vegi Tate pour cold water on them. Imi Tate tries to mimic everyone, Devas Tate loves to be disruptive, and Poten Tate wants to be a big shot. But it's Facili Tate, Cogi Tate, and Medi Tate who always save the day and get everyone pulling together."
ONE PART OF THE SPONSORS' PRAYER the last weekend seemed to sum up a new insight over the past week, especially the past few days. If i remember it correctly, it goes something like this, "Lord, grant me the grace to celebrate what is holy in others and to be patient with what i don't understand."
The AGM at my estate last Saturday had turned out to be quite unpleasant. The turnout was small -- only about 100 people and dwindling as minutes ticked by. Nit-picking on the proposed budget and resolutions was incessant. It seemed that residents who had no issue did not turn up, but those who had issues did. "Cost cutting" was a repeated clarion call. Tried to speak in support of the MC proposals, but to no avail. All three resolutions could not be passed. Someone asked for a new council. As a result, despite a number of appeals, many in the MC chose not to continue their service.
One MC member had behaved especially obnoxiously, insisting on a new resolution to oust our current MA although from what i can see, nothing serious was amiss. Having been informed earlier about petty squabbles (sounds like politicking) within the MC, i stood up toward the end to join another MC member to object to the nomination of this nasty MC member.
After the event, wondered what had happened to my insight on "the fruit of the Spirit" and "the works of the flesh" (see How Will I Know?). Have i joined the 'green' Human Bond group in Spiral Dynamics whose 'nasty streak' i'd frowned upon weeks ago? Felt a little strange to hear another resident (who had been rather loud-mouthed and heated in his questioning earlier) speak of "better communication" and "no separation of 'us' and 'them' ".
However, is this one of those incidents which Jesus had spoken of in Luke 12:49-53, where he wants us to be divided, "father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law"?
At certain moments, had wondered whether any one of us at the meeting truly understand the issues at hand or one another well enough. Yet, there we were: a number of us standing there arguing earnestly (even heatedly) for or against some resolutions that had been proposed. For some reason yesterday, a church friend M. kept telling me his 'realities of life' -- rampant unemployment, extensive corporate cost-cutting and bleakness of outlook for people above 40. i think i understand some of my nit-picking neighbours a little better now. Are they still reeling from the effects of the economic downturn (despite reports of an 8-9% growth this year)?
Is this a case where we need to be patient with what we don't understand?
